Procedure

Indications

Orthopedic hardware is used to stabilize, repair, or assist in healing bones. This hardware can fail or cause irritation/pain, in which case it needs to be removed. Hardware failure means that the hardware didn’t live up to our expectations. Patients who seek hardware removal often note:

  • foreign body sensation

  • deep generalized pain around the implant

  • associated irritability/sensitivity (such as when touched or knocked)

  • stiffness

Risk Factors

Most of the time patients don’t experience issues with their orthopedic hardware, however 5-16% do and it requires the hardware to be removed.  Factors that may make you more likely to require hardware removal are:

  • low body weight/thin soft tissue

  • metal allergy/sensitivity

Procedure

This is a routine procedure for our staff. The procedure consists of 4 steps:

  1. Sedation: You’re anesthetized so that you’re unconscious for the entire procedure.

  2. Incision: A surgical incision (i.e. cut) is made so that we can access the hardware

  3. Removal: The orthopedic hardware is removed using precision surgical tools. Each case is unique which means the removal method varies. However, we’ll carefully discuss with you the removal procedure prior to surgery.

  4. Closure: The incision is closed and anesthesia is stopped.

Insurance

Most medical insurances do cover this procedure. We accept the following insurances:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield

  • Cigna

  • United

  • Aetna
